MSc Computing students complete project at Mendix World

by Alex Went, on 12 May 2014 09:27:32 CEST

Pair entered international app-building hackathon in Rotterdam

Mendix is a cloud-based platform that allows organizations to build, integrate and deploy web and mobile applications faster and in a highly agile way. Each year, Mendix World brings together developers and users at a global conference in Rotterdam. Prague College was represented at this year's event by two MSc Computing students. Michele Nuovo and Petr Roudensky.

Part of the challenge for Petr and Michele came in the form of a 24-hour Hackaton competition to build an application for Terre des Hommes, a children’s aid organization with 17 satellite offices distributed across Asia, Africa and South America. Three different use case were proposed to help Terre des Hommes to solve real business problems quickly and efficiently; and ten development teams competed to create innovative solutions. At the end of the event, all applications were presented to a professional jury that selected for the final round.

Michele Nuovo writes 'The overall experience was very positive and challenging since it was the first time we were participating in a such event. Our application was aimed at creating new ways for the charity to provide donors with greater transparency about how the organization allocates the roughly 23 million Euros it collects each year."

"During the contest we learnt how to work together as team by facing different issues such as how to split the work, how to prioritize tasks, agreeing on how to proceed, and so on. This experience also helped us to discover both our limits and areas of improvement in terms of knowledge and project management. Being part of this event was a great learning opportunity and the kind of experience that I would strongly recommend to future students, because competing with more experienced and professional participants motivated us to learn more and to improve ourselves. I'd like to thank my lecturer Jorge Carillo, who put a lot of effort into make this amazing learning experience happen; and also to Prague College, who supported and helped us during our time at Mendix."
