Inaugural Hacks/Hackers meeting held at Prague College

by Alex Went, on 15 April 2014 15:20:36 CEST

Prague College was delighted to host the inaugural meeting of the Prague chapter of Hacks/Hackers, an open forum bringing together journalists and technologists.

The evening's discussion focused on data visualization. Pavla Holcová presented cautionary tales of data visualization when it goes wrong, with tips on how to avoid similar mistakes. Anton Chiriaev of Radio Free Europe showed RFE coverage of the current unrest in Ukraine, employing interactive infographics and embedded videos.

Filip Rožánek of Český rozhlas presented his longform project Srpen 1968, a widely read and innovative report that revisited the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia. Filip is working on a similiar project to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution.

Francesco Occhipinti shared ideas on data visualization tools and strategies for the future, while Jan Boček of IHNED.cz outlined the difficulties implementing forward-thinking data viz in a traditional newsroom, and Jan Cibulka, also from IHNED.cz, discussed the legal issues surrounding access to data.

Many thanks to  thanks to Pavla Holcová and Theo Schwinke of Sourcefabric, and Adam Javůrek of IHNED.cz, for helping to organize the event; also to Ken Mugabei, Pavel Suchanek and Alex Went of Prague College. It is hoped that the next Hacks/Hackers event will take place in mid-June.
