Prague College's art students benefit from specialist training in woodwork and associated skills

Recently Prague College set up a partnership with DIY Praha, a multipurpose workshop and design space intended to meet the needs of creative craftspeople of all skill levels. The centre is home to any number of projects, from furniture building to set design and more. Prague College students have been attending specialist woodworking courses, including lectures followed by a hands-on workshop.

For the first session, students from our School of Art & Design learnt about types of trees and how they grow; the differences beween softwoods and hardwoods; and the appropriate uses and purposes of each. They were introduced to a wide range of tools - band saws, table saws and radial saws, tools for planing and routing, sanders and grinders, and methods of joining.

Head of School George Allen commented 'The partnership benefits our students by offering a new skill set that they can incorporate into their own work. This can help them with the material construction of installations, frames, and so on; additionally this converted factory space gives them a larger workspace than might normally be available. We are really delighted to be cooperating with DIY Praha, and look forward to the upcoming workshops.'
